Better Wine Tastings

The best time to taste a wine is between 10:30 in the morning and noon. In fact, this is the time of day when your sense of smell and taste are at their most sensitive. The day has barely begun, the taste buds have not yet been too much in demand. As for the nasal mucous membranes, they haven’t been overwhelmed by environmental odours or pollution. Before you taste, even if it seems a bit odd, don’t hesitate to blow your nose and rinse your mouth with water.

A good tasting shouldn’t include more than four or five wines, especially for beginners or new wine lovers. Wine aromas and tannins blend together very quickly; so beyond five wines, it’s difficult to separate out individual aromas and mouthfeel. And above all, if you’re doing a serious tasting, write down you impressions in a small notebook. It’s not pretentious, just a smart thing to do and will help you to remember the different vintages. Enjoy!
